Getting home at night

BOGESTRA's NachtExpress only runs on Friday and Saturday nights and before public holidays, hourly from Bochum Hbf, lines NE1 to NE8 and NE10, and the U35 then runs all night too. During the week services end around 01:20. Taxi: Taxi Bochum 0234 333000.

BOGESTRA timetables ↗

Closing time

In North Rhine-Westphalia there's only the cleaning hour from 05:00 to 06:00, and Bochum hasn't set a longer general closing time. On New Year's Eve, at Carnival and on the night of the Maiabendfest, even that is lifted. Sachs and Trompete party until 05:00 at weekends.

What's banned?

When VfL play at home, a glass ban applies around the Ruhrstadion and the inner ring road, from 4 hours before to 2 hours after the match. Bochum's safety regulations ban peeing in public and bawling, with fines of up to €1,000. There's no general ban on drinking alcohol in the street.

Fiege, currywurst, Grönemeyer

The beer is Moritz Fiege, Bochum's family brewery since 1878. The food is currywurst, made with Dönninghaus's cult sausage at the Bratwursthaus on Kortumstraße. And before every VfL home game the stadium sings Herbert Grönemeyer's “Bochum”, the city's unofficial anthem.

Getting there

By train you'll reach Bochum from Dortmund in 9 minutes, from Düsseldorf in 51 minutes, from Cologne in 1 hour 17 minutes and from Frankfurt in 2 hours 24 minutes. Dortmund Airport is about 29 km away, Düsseldorf about 45 km. FlixBus stops at the main station on Wittener Straße.

Where to stay

The most practical place to stay is around the main station, a few minutes from the Bermuda3Eck. Basic hotels there start at about €45 a night. On average Friday is more expensive at €107 than Monday at €75, and October is the most expensive month.

Weather and plan B

The outdoor season in the Bermuda3Eck starts at the end of April with Stühle raus!, and summer highs are around 25 °C. October, December and January are the wettest months. When it rains, there are escape rooms, laser tag, disco bowling, the Mining Museum and the planetarium.
