Bachelor Party Gone Wrong: 10 Stories That Make You Think
Bachelor parties gone wrong: ✓ real stag and hen dos that ended badly ✓ from funny to tragic, from police raids to prison ☝ Definitely not one to copy!
Most stag and hen dos end with a hangover and good memories. Some end in hospital, in court or in jail. We’ve gathered ten real cases, documented in the media, in which a bachelor or bachelorette party went completely off the rails – from a staged prank that brought out the special forces to a fatal accident. Not a “Hangover” script, but things that really happened.
Some of these stories are more stupid than dramatic; others are deadly serious. That’s exactly the point: where the line between a laugh and a disaster lies is often clearer in hindsight than when you’re drunk.
A kidnapping goes wrong: manhunt & special forces called in!
In March 2023, a stag do in Neubiberg near Munich triggered a massive police operation when four friends aged 34 to 39 tried to “kidnap” the groom to Mallorca. They wore balaclavas, pulled a sack over the groom’s head and dragged him into a car, which an 80-year-old witness saw and reported to the police as a kidnapping.
This led to a large-scale manhunt involving even the SEK, the German police special forces, and a helicopter. The car was finally stopped on the motorway towards Munich Airport, where it quickly became clear it was a joke. Whether the men will have to cover the cost of the operation themselves, which runs to at least several thousand euros, is still unclear. Despite all the chaos, according to the police they still managed to catch their flight to Mallorca.
Hen party turns into a food fight and brawl!
A girls’ night out for a bachelorette party in Koblenz got seriously out of hand in July 2022. After heavy drinking, a group of six women behaved so rowdily and disruptively in a restaurant on Hohenzollernstraße that it led to verbal clashes with the staff.
When the staff tried to throw the partying women out of the restaurant, the situation escalated: two women aged 25 and 51 attacked the staff, spitting at and hitting them, whereupon the staff threw food to defend themselves. By the time the police arrived, the group had already left, but they were stopped nearby. The 25-year-old main suspect had a breath alcohol level of 2.11 per mille. Both women were reported for assault, and the whole group was banned from Koblenz city centre.
Train journey ends in rampage, assault and arrest
In May 2022, three men (59, 27, 24) on a stag do ran riot on an ICE high-speed train from Cologne to Düsseldorf, attacking several railway staff. The drunk men from Rhineland-Palatinate were loud and abusive and shoved a 38-year-old conductor who had earlier asked them to keep the noise down. When a train driver on his way home stepped in, the men hit and kicked him, causing him to lose his balance and fall. Another conductor and several passengers came to his aid.
As a result, the train had to make an unscheduled stop in Düsseldorf-Benrath, where the federal police arrested the three men. Two of the attackers were taken into custody for refusing to cooperate and to prevent further offences. The three men are now under investigation for joint assault and insulting behaviour. The train driver and the second conductor were injured and taken straight to hospital. The conductor who was first shoved also went to hospital later.
Stag do in Mallorca gets out of hand: wedding missed
In July 2021, a British groom missed his own wedding after a stag do in Mallorca got out of hand. During the party, the young Brit threw a motorbike he had hired into the sea, which led to his arrest by the Spanish police. The judge in charge took his passport and set bail at €6,000. Because the groom couldn’t pay the bail in time, and transfers from the UK take longer because of Brexit, he couldn’t return home for the wedding as planned.
The wedding then had to be postponed, which presumably left the bride pretty annoyed. It isn’t known exactly how she reacted to the news. The young man was left with a probable hangover, €6,000 less in his account and a wedding that never happened.
Stag do ends in prison sentences
A stag do on a plane ended with prison sentences for four British men. The group, on their way from Manchester to Las Vegas, caused trouble with excessive drinking and inappropriate behaviour. They already seemed drunk at boarding, drank alcohol they’d brought on board during the flight, got into fights and did press-ups in the aisle. After they refused to stick to the alcohol ban, a flight attendant confiscated five litres of alcohol, which made the men turn abusive.
The crew then decided to make an unscheduled landing in Canada and remove the group. The 316 other passengers, including 12 children, had to wait around three hours before the flight continued. The four men were sentenced to two years and 19 months in prison respectively for being drunk and violent on an aircraft.
Stag do in Mallorca ends in jail for 13 Germans
After a party in Mallorca in June 2019, a group of 13 German men were remanded in custody on suspicion of setting fire to a bar below their hotel balcony. Witnesses reported noise and discarded cigarette butts that landed on the venue’s reed roof. Alcohol was also allegedly poured onto the roof, which made it catch fire.
The fire caused considerable damage of at least €150,000 and left two people slightly injured. Six of the accused are said to be firefighters. If convicted of negligent arson, they face several years in prison. The judge in charge refused to release them on bail. The exact circumstances are still under investigation.
Groom-to-be bitten on the tongue by a snake
In July 2020, a 38-year-old man from Berlin was bitten on the tongue by an adder at a stag do in a mountain hut in Styria, Austria. The man had mistaken the baby snake for a worm and touched it with his tongue as a dare. After the bite, his throat swelled up and he had to be treated by an emergency doctor and taken to the regional hospital in Wiener Neustadt, around 60 kilometres away.
Groom shoots coke dealer and goes to prison
A party in Wichita in May 2009 ended in first-degree murder. Jeremy and Mike went out drinking with Mike’s younger brother Robert, who was due to get married the next day. When Mike decided he needed cocaine to liven up the party in Wichita, he called his old dealer Vincent. Unfortunately for the partying men, Vincent had been trying to get clean and hung up, which made Mike angry.
The whole party then confronted him and – to cut a long story short – the cocaine dealer didn’t survive the incident. Jeremy got more than 11 years in prison for his part in the confrontation, and Robert (the groom) got 19 years.
Stag do ends in death!
At a stag do in Würzburg in July 2022, there was a tragic accident in which a 39-year-old man from Frankfurt am Main fell from a bridge into the River Main and was later found dead. The exact circumstances of the accident are unknown; alcohol may have played a part. The man wasn’t seen again after the fall. The next morning, an angler discovered a lifeless body in the water and alerted the police. Emergency services recovered the body and confirmed it was the 39-year-old man from Frankfurt. The police are now investigating the exact circumstances of the incident.
Man dies after hitting a bridge
A man in Detroit died of severe injuries he suffered in June 2011 when he stuck his head out of the emergency exit – not the sunroof – of a party bus. Salvator T., 24, was celebrating wildly at a friend’s bachelor party when he stood up, no doubt to let out a long whoop of joy, just as the bus passed under an apparently very low overpass.
The overpass caused such a severe head injury that he fell into a coma immediately, while the bus made a detour to the hospital. The following week he was declared dead because of his “massive head injuries”.
Conclusion: better a party without regrets!
On screen – whether in the “Hangover” films or here as a headline – escalations like these are entertaining. Nobody wants to live through them, least of all the tragic ones. As soon as there’s serious damage, people get hurt or the stag or hen do ends in a cell, the fun is over.
A wild party and a bit of responsibility aren’t mutually exclusive. Good planning, an eye on how much everyone has drunk and respect for bystanders are usually enough. The best bachelor and bachelorette parties are the ones you still like remembering the next day anyway.
