All costs and money-saving tips ↓

Getting home at night

On Friday and Saturday nights and before public holidays, the NightLine runs on nine lines, several of them from Jakominiplatz. There's no night bus during the week. Taxi: 0316 878 (24 hours) or 0316 2801.

Holding Graz timetables ↗

Closing time

Bars, cafés and clubs may stay open until 05:00, inns and restaurants until 02:00. Beer gardens and outdoor seating close at 23:00, on private land at 22:00. On New Year's Eve and from Carnival Saturday to Ash Wednesday there's no closing time.

What's banned?

In the city centre between Tummelplatz, Eisernes Tor and Schloßbergplatz, drinking alcohol in public is banned, except in beer gardens and outdoor seating areas. The municipal wardens (Ordnungswache) fine you €30. You'll only get into the casino with official photo ID.

Styrian specialities

On the table you'll find pumpkin seed oil, dark green and nutty. Schilcher is a rosé made from the Blauer Wildbacher grape in West Styria. For a Buschenschank (a winemaker's tavern) head out to the wine roads in South Styria.

Getting there

From Vienna there's a train almost every half hour, from Klagenfurt it takes 41 minutes via the Koralmbahn. From Linz it's around 3 hours, from Munich at least 5 hours 25 minutes. The airport is around 9 km south of the city and has its own railway station.

Where to stay and when

Stay in the Old Town, in Lend or around Jakominiplatz; from there you can walk or take the Bim (tram). Around 65,000 visitors come to the Herbstmesse autumn fair in early October, and the city centre is packed for Aufsteirern in September.

Weather and plan B

Graz gets more than 2,100 hours of sunshine a year. The beer garden, the Murinsel and outdoor seating work in the warm season. If it rains: the Schlossberg slide inside the hill, escape rooms, billiards at Brot & Spiele or the Auster with its sauna.
