Budapest Stag Do & Bachelor Party: Ruin Bars, Thermal Baths and Nights on the Danube

Ruin bars in District VII, night bathing at Rudas Baths, a party boat on the Danube and clubs until 06:00: here's how to plan your stag do or hen party in Budapest, with the best things to do, prices in forint and ways home at night.

Good to know

Stag & hen do planning tips

What does a night out cost?

A beer (0.5 l) costs from 800 Ft in a basic pub, 1,500 Ft in smaller ruin bars, 2,200 Ft in the best-known ruin bar and up to 2,500 Ft in Gozsdu. Cocktails around 3,500 Ft, up to 6,000 Ft with a Danube view. You pay in forint; most places don't take euros. Tip 10 to 15% if there's no service charge on the bill.

All costs and money-saving tips ↓

Getting home at night

Night buses are numbered from 900 to 999, and tram 6 on the Grand Boulevard runs round the clock. Single ticket 500 Ft bought in advance, 24-hour pass 2,750 Ft, fine for riding without a ticket 16,000 Ft. Taxi: Főtaxi +36 1 222 2222, City Taxi +36 1 211 1111, fares 1,300 Ft base charge plus 521 Ft per km; there's Bolt too.

BKK night transport ↗

Closing time

There's no citywide closing time. In the District VII party quarter, venues may only open between 00:00 and 06:00 with a licence; at most 200 are issued, and the conditions are their own security and street cleaning. Instant-Fogas and Doboz are open until 06:00, Akvárium until 05:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.

What's banned?

Drinking alcohol in streets, squares and parks is banned; only venues' outdoor areas are exempt. In districts V to XI shops don't sell alcohol from 22:00 to 06:00. Beer bikes are banned in districts VI and VII, and late-night venues in inner District VII don't take part in pub crawls. If you're driving: 0.0 blood alcohol limit.

Pálinka and fröccs

Pálinka is fruit brandy of at least 37.5%, Unicum a herbal bitter made from more than 40 herbs. Wine is drunk as fröccs: a kisfröccs is 1 dl of wine with 1 dl of soda. And many Hungarians don't clink glasses with beer: legend has it that in 1849 Austrian officers celebrated the execution of the 13 Martyrs of Arad by clinking their tankards.

Getting there

Flight time from Munich about 1 hour 15 minutes, from Berlin about 1 hour 30 minutes, from Hamburg about 1 hour 40 minutes. The 100E bus runs round the clock and takes 32 minutes to Deák Ferenc tér, with its own ticket for 2,500 Ft. By Railjet from Vienna about 2 hours 40 minutes, direct from Munich from 6 hours 50 minutes.

Where to stay

For a hotel for your stag or hen do in Budapest, districts V, VI and VII keep you close to the ruin bars, the Basilica and the Danube. A hostel bed costs €18–25 in the off-season and €28–38 in high season, with 15 to 25% more at weekends. On the Formula 1 weekend hotel prices can double, so book early.

Weather and plan B

July is the hottest month at around 27 °C during the day, and January is around 3 °C. Partying outdoors works best from late May to mid-September, and June gets the most rain. Plan B: baths with indoor pools of 28 to 40 °C at Széchenyi Baths, escape rooms, karaoke or bowling.

Thermal baths and night bathing

What sets Budapest apart from every other stag and hen city: outdoor pools at 36 to 38 °C at Széchenyi Baths, night bathing at Rudas on Fridays and Saturdays until 03:00, a beer spa in a wooden tub or the Sparty on Saturday night.

Party boat and the Danube

A boat party with a DJ from Kossuth Lajos tér, boats with unlimited prosecco and beer, goulash on board, or parties on the club ships A38 and Kassa Boat along the banks.

Shooting, axes, laser tag

For the stag do, but not only: the Celeritas shooting range with 50 rounds per person, axe throwing on your own lane on Dohány utca, laser tag in two arenas for 22 people each, or bubble football with beer.

Escape rooms, karaoke, bowling

Escape rooms at PániQ-Szoba with two teams competing, or at Exit The Room, private karaoke rooms for up to 30 people by Gozsdu udvar and 8 bowling lanes at Strike Bowling Club.

Pub crawl and BierBus

A guided pub crawl through the ruin bars, an hour on an open-top bus with a beer tap instead of a beer bike, which is banned in districts VI and VII, and Szimpla Kert to start.

Food, pálinka, cocktails

A food walk with tastings, a private cocktail class with a bartender, lángos and goulash in the Great Market Hall on Fővám tér, or goulash soup at Getto Gulyás in the party quarter.

Questions

Budapest stag do and hen party FAQ

Where can large groups book in Budapest?
Morrison's 2 has its own stag and hen package for 7,999 Ft per person, Doboz has private booths for up to 40 people, and Rosenstein a gallery for 55 guests. Laser Park hires out arenas for 22 people each, and Strike Bowling does buffet packages from 20 people. At Hungarikum Bisztró online bookings only go up to 12 people.
What's banned on a stag do in Budapest?
Drinking alcohol in streets, squares and parks is banned, and shops in districts V to XI don't sell alcohol from 22:00 to 06:00. Beer bikes are banned in districts VI and VII, which is why the BierBus runs. Late-night venues in inner District VII may not serve pub crawls, and Ötkert doesn't always let in groups in matching slogan T-shirts.
What are good things to do for a hen party in Budapest?
Drinks at High Note next to the Basilica, dinner at Mazel Tov, a private cocktail class, a karaoke room of your own at Blue Bird for up to 30 people and, the day after, Széchenyi Baths with a beer spa. For a bachelorette party in Budapest that would rather bathe at night: Rudas on Fridays and Saturdays from 22:00 to 03:00.
Can you pay in euros in Budapest?
No, you pay in forint. Most venues don't take euros, and those that do use a poor rate and give change in forint. In restaurants a tip of 10 to 15% is usual if there's no service charge on the bill; Hungarikum Bisztró adds 15%.
What can you do in Budapest when it rains?
Head to the thermal baths: Széchenyi Baths have indoor medicinal pools at 28 to 40 °C, and Rudas a Turkish bath. Then there are escape rooms at PániQ-Szoba or Exit The Room, karaoke at Blue Bird, laser tag at Laser Park or bowling at Strike Bowling Club.
