PMDP public transport ↗There's no known general closing time: Mefisto is open from 21:00 to 05:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, the Oldies Club in the Hotel Continental until 03:00, KEGzistence and Zlatá Kráva until 01:00. By Czech law, quiet hours run from 22:00 to 06:00, so keep it down on the way home.
Drinking alcohol is banned all day in the city centre zone, at stops and platforms and within 50 m of schools, even just standing around with an open bottle. It's allowed on the outdoor seating areas of bars and restaurants during opening hours and at licensed events. Stag and hen dos aren't banned in Pilsen; the beer just belongs at the table.
The first golden lager was brewed in Pilsen in 1842, and the first brewmaster was a Bavarian, Josef Groll. Tankové pivo isn't a beer style but a way of serving it: unpasteurised Pilsner Urquell arrives at the pub chilled in tanks and is poured without added CO2; look out for the word tankovna. A tip of 5 to 10% is normal.
From Prague the Západní Express runs hourly and takes about 1 hour 15 minutes, FlixBus and RegioJet about 1 hour. From Munich and Regensburg there are direct trains about every 2 hours; from Nuremberg the FlixBus, at around 2 hours 20 minutes, is faster than the train. By car via the A6 and the D5; the e-vignette costs 230 Kč for 1 day, 300 Kč for 10 days.
For a hotel for your stag or hen do in Pilsen, the Old Town is the best location but also the most expensive; a hostel bed costs 300–600 Kč, a double room in a 3-star hotel 1,200–2,000 Kč. U Salzmannů has 11 double rooms and 4 apartments for up to 45 guests, and Klub Malých Pivovarů has a guesthouse. For Pilsner Fest in October, book 1 to 2 months ahead.
The best time to go is May to September; in January the daily average is around 0 °C. Plan B if it rains: the Historical Underground at around 10 °C, the brewery tour with its cellars, the Brewery Museum, two escape rooms at Escapora, or straight to the beer bath in Černice.

Municipal cultural club at Havířská 11, a stage since 1990 for gigs by young bands, niche genres and alternative culture, international bands included. Gig nights usually start at 19:30 or 20:00; for the group only if the programme suits, so check first.
Cultural complex at Prokopova 30 with a concert hall for up to 500 people: big bands, rap acts and festival nights. In summer it moves outside to the city beach “Pláž” for up to 1,500 guests or the quieter courtyard “Zahrádka” with a grill and live music.

Tapster school on the brewery grounds: the short version takes 60 minutes and costs 390 Kč, in Czech or English, while the full tapster school takes 210 minutes for 1,190 Kč, in Czech only. Whole groups book the Šalanda cellar room for 180 minutes from 10,000 Kč, also in German.
Tour of about 800 m of passages 5 to 7 m beneath the Old Town; the whole network is more than 13 km long: 60 minutes for 250 Kč, also in German. It's around 10 °C down there, so bring a jacket; groups of more than 15 book by email. Meeting point Veleslavínova 58/6.
Brewery Museum in the historic brewhouse with brewing rights in the Old Town, in the same building as the entrance to the Historical Underground: 60-minute tour for 150 Kč, also in German, then a can of beer for over-18s. Open all year, easy to combine with the underground.
Beer bath at the Purkmistr brewery hotel in Černice: 25 minutes costs 1,100 Kč in a single tub or 2,200 Kč in a double tub, with a wooden barrel of Purkmistr 12° beside it to pour your own. The Pivní rituál with a massage takes 90 minutes for 1,670 Kč; daily 10:00–21:00, book ahead.
Escape rooms at Doudlevecká 17 near DEPO2015: 2 rooms, Psychiatric Asylum and Trial, each for 2 to 6 players and 60 minutes. From 1,000 Kč per game, cash before the game; larger groups play both rooms side by side, daily 09:00–21:00 after booking online.
Karting track about 1 km south-east of the Old Town with karts up to 60 km/h, minimum height 135 cm. Groups hire the track exclusively for 13,000 Kč per hour plus VAT, minimum 1 hour; there's a restaurant with table bookings, and times are in the booking calendar.
Cultural and creative centre at Presslova 14, south of the Old Town, opened for the European Capital of Culture year: exhibitions, workshops, escape games, a café and a street food market. Reception daily 10:00–18:00; the industrial halls can be hired for your own party.

Republic Square is the heart of the Old Town and the meeting point before the evening: the Cathedral of St Bartholomew in the middle, and U Salzmannů, U Mansfelda and the bars on Pražská all within walking distance. The Christmas market stands here in Advent.
The cathedral in the middle of Republic Square has the tallest church tower in the Czech Republic at 102.26 m, and it's almost 300 steps up to the gallery. Climb daily 10:00–18:30 for 110 Kč; at the back, touching the worn angel's head on the railing is said to bring luck.
The historic double gate at the entrance to the Pilsner Urquell brewery grounds is the meeting point for the brewery tour, the tapster school and Na Spilce. The grounds are open all year except 24 to 26 December and 1 January; from the gate it's back over the Radbuza into the Old Town.
The Great Synagogue on the western Old Town ring is the largest in the Czech Republic, completed in 1893. Inside Sunday to Thursday 10:00–17:00, entry 140 Kč, groups of 15 or more 100 Kč; closed on Fridays and Saturdays, so as a meeting point it's from the outside.
Strip of park on the southern edge of the Old Town, part of the green belt round the historic centre. From here it's only a few steps to Na břehu Rhôny and Pivstro on Bezručova and to Mefisto on Goethova, so it's the meeting point for the second half of the night.
Riverside street along the Radbuza on the south-eastern edge of the Old Town, with a view of the water. From here you can walk to KartArena and on to DEPO2015, and the Old Town is a few minutes away; a quiet meeting point between afternoon action and dinner.

In February and March, the music festival of the Plzeňská filharmonie, with classical and interdisciplinary programmes.
In early May, several days of Slavnosti svobody marking the liberation by the US Army: 4 music stages, the main stage on Republic Square, and a convoy of almost 300 historic military vehicles on Klatovská.
In June, the festival of puppet and alternative theatre, running since 1967 and now held every two years.
In early October the brewery celebrates Pilsner Urquell's birthday in the brewery courtyard and at Na Spilce, with live music and unfiltered beer, tapped at 18:42. Book accommodation early.
From late November to 23 December the Christmas market stands on Republic Square, daily 10:00–20:00, with a carved nativity scene and carol singing.
