Liège Stag Do & Bachelor Party: a Metre of Beer in the Carré, Pékèt on the Marché and 374 Steps to the Citadel

A metre of beer in the Carré, around 30 kinds of pékèt behind the town hall, a brewery at the foot of the Montagne de Bueren and pubs until 06:00: here's how to plan your stag do or hen party in Liège, with the best things to do, 22 minutes from Aachen.

Stag & hen do planning tips

What does a night out cost?

A draught beer (0.5 l) costs €5 on average in Liège, €3.5–6 depending on the place. At La Cour St-Jean a metre of beer with 13 Maes costs €29, a pékèt fruité €1.50, 4 for €5. Gigs at La Zone mostly €10. Boulets at Bistrot d'en Face €19.50, group menus at Amon Nanesse €27–34.

All costs and money-saving tips ↓

Getting home at night

Tram T1 runs daily from 05:00 to 01:00, every 7 to 15 minutes outside peak hours. A TEC ticket costs €2.80 and is valid for 90 minutes on buses and trams. Night buses at weekends aren't on record, so plan on a taxi: in Liège Uber only books licensed taxis, and you pay the metered fare in the app.

Closing time

No general closing time is on record. At La Cour St-Jean in the Carré people dance until 06:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, until 05:00 on Thursdays. Pot au Lait is open Monday to Saturday until 04:00, the Flak Bar and Studio Carré until 03:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. The Carré is busiest Thursday to Saturday.

What's banned?

Around the Carré, night shops in a defined area may not sell alcohol or glass bottles on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings; one shop that ignored this had to close on those evenings for 2 months. Liège has no low-emission zone, but Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent do.

Pékèt and boulets

Pékèt is Walloon jenever with juniper, 30 to 40% ABV neat and 20 to 25% when flavoured, served in small shot glasses. The Maison du Pékèt has around 30 fruity varieties. It goes with boulets à la liégeoise, meatballs in a sweet-and-sour sauce with fries, and the Liège waffle with pearl sugar. Service is included in the price; rounding up is usual.

Getting there

ICE and Eurostar trains from Frankfurt, Cologne and Aachen stop at Liège-Guillemins station: 22 minutes from Aachen, with 8 ICE trains a day to Belgium. From Brussels it's 39 minutes, from Amsterdam from 3 hours 15 minutes. FlixBus stops at stop F at the station, tickets from €4.48. Liège airport is a cargo airport.

Where to stay

For a hotel for your stag or hen do in Liège, the Pentahotel at Boulevard de la Sauvenière 100 is right on the Carré, and the Ibis at Place de la République Française 41 is in the centre. The Georges Simenon youth hostel in Outremeuse looks after groups of 15 or more, breakfast and bed linen included, about a 10-minute walk from the Place du Marché.

Weather and plan B

In July the average high is 24.1 °C, in January 6.4 °C; it rains on 138.8 days a year, so a good one day in 3. Plan B if it rains: escape rooms at Keywi and The Right Escape, karaoke at Studio Carré, the brewery tour at Brasserie {C}, laser game at Funly or the La Boverie museum.
