Munich Stag Do & Bachelor Party: Beer Gardens, the Isar and the Home of the Wiesn

Beer halls in the Old Town, beer gardens under chestnut trees and clubs on Sonnenstraße: here's how to put together your own stag do or hen party in Munich, with the best things to do for groups of men and women alike.

Good to know

Stag & hen do planning tips

What does a night out cost?

A Maß costs around €9–12 in a beer garden, and €14.50 to just under €18 at the Wiesn. Cocktails are around €11–16, club entry usually €10–20, and at Neuraum usually €10 on the door. All guide prices.

All costs and money-saving tips ↓

Getting home at night

On Friday and Saturday nights and before public holidays the U-Bahn runs all night, each line every 30 minutes, and in the city centre you'll get a train about every 15 minutes. During the week it stops around 01:00, then it's night lines from Stachus or Taxi München 089 21610, IsarFunk 089 450540.

MVG timetable ↗

Closing time and beer gardens

Indoors there's only the cleaning hour from 05:00 to 06:00, so clubs can stay open until 05:00. In beer gardens, last orders are at 22:30 and they close at 23:00. Outdoor terraces usually close at 23:00, in summer at weekends sometimes at midnight.

What's banned?

Around the main station, drinking alcohol in the street is banned around the clock, so no beer for the road when you arrive. Swimming in the Eisbach is banned; the current is dangerous. Barbecues by the Isar only in the designated barbecue zones, campfires never.

Wiesn time

The Wiesn runs from mid to late September until the first Sunday in October. That's when rooms are scarce and expensive. Bags over 3 litres and glass are not allowed on the grounds. Part of every tent is unreserved, which at weekends means getting there early.

Getting there

By ICE you'll reach the main station from Stuttgart in just over 2 hours, from Frankfurt in just over 3, from Berlin in around 4 and from Hamburg in 5.5–6.5 hours. From the airport, the S1 and S8 take around 45 minutes into the city, and long-distance coaches stop at the ZOB coach station at Hackerbrücke.

Where to stay

Stay in the Old Town, the Glockenbachviertel or around the main station and you'll be home quickly. It's most expensive during the Wiesn, the Spring Festival and big trade fairs, when group rooms go early. Be upfront when you book that you're a stag or hen group.

Beer garden etiquette

In the self-service area of a proper beer garden you're allowed to bring your own food; you buy the drinks there. At the long tables you sit down with strangers. A table with a Stammtisch sign (reserved for regulars) stays free unless you're offered a seat.

Neighbourhoods

Where to party in Munich: the neighbourhoods

Most groups start at lunchtime or early evening in a beer hall in the Old Town and then move on, to the Glockenbachviertel, Sonnenstraße or Schwabing. In summer a beer garden is part of it. Distances are short, and the U-Bahn covers the rest.

For beer halls and the start

Around Marienplatz, Platzl and Frauenplatz you'll find the Hofbräuhaus, the Augustiner Stammhaus and the Glöckl am Dom, where Augustiner comes from the wooden barrel. At the Viktualienmarkt you drink your first half-litre standing up. Touristy, but it's the start almost every group wants.

Budget

How much does a stag or hen do in Munich cost?

Beer in Munich is more expensive than in the north, and much more so during the Wiesn. What makes the biggest difference is accommodation, and whether you stay in the beer garden or move on to a club.

Guide prices per person
OptionPer personWhat's included
One night out€60–110beer hall with food, bar, club entry
A day with an activity€100–180plus escape room, mini golf, food tour or bike tour
Weekend€200–390two nights out, one activity, one night in a double room, travel not included

💡 How to save

  • Bring your own food: in the self-service area at the Chinese Tower, Hirschgarten or Taxisgarten your own food is allowed; you only buy the drinks.
  • Beer in hand: the standing bar at the Viktualienmarkt has no dining room and no reservations, just the beer.
  • Live music without big tickets: at Milla Club bands play almost every night, and tickets are often cheap.
  • Escape rooms for a big group: with most providers the price per person drops as the group gets bigger, so split into two rooms rather than four.
  • Avoid the Wiesn: outside the Wiesn and trade fairs, rooms cost a fraction, and the Spring Festival in April is the smaller alternative.

Guide prices per person, based on the prices of the venues and tours on this page. The bride or groom usually doesn't pay; their share is split across the group. The planner above adds up what your programme costs.

Travel isn't included, as that depends on where you're coming from. Accommodation is based on the country's price level. Work out your own budget with the cost calculator.

Seasonal tips

Seasonal highlights in Munich

These festivals come round every year. If your weekend falls on one of them, the city will be packed and beds expensive, but you'll see Munich the way it celebrates. If you'd rather keep things relaxed, plan around them.

March

🍺 Strong beer season

During Lent, usually in March, the breweries serve strong beer. The strong beer festival on the Nockherberg lasts a good two weeks, and it opens with the Derblecken, where politicians get roasted.

April to May

🎠 Spring Festival

The little Wiesn on the Theresienwiese, after Easter from mid or late April for a good two weeks, with beer tents and rides.

April to October

🌳 Beer garden season

In good weather the big beer gardens are open from spring to October. Last orders at 22:30, and you can bring your own food.

May to September

🪵 Rafting on the Isar

From May to mid-September the rafts float from Wolfratshausen to Thalkirchen, with a band and beer. Whole rafts are booked up early.

June to July

🎪 Tollwood Summer

Festival in Olympiapark Süd in June and July, with concerts, food stalls and a market. Entry to the market is free.

September to October

🎡 Oktoberfest

From a Saturday in the second half of September until the first Sunday in October. Part of every tent is unreserved; at weekends, get there early. Hotels are at their most expensive.

November to December

🎄 Christmas market and Tollwood Winter

From late November to Christmas on Marienplatz, plus the winter Tollwood on the Theresienwiese.

Year-round highlights

  • Beer halls every day

Questions

Munich stag do and hen party FAQ

Where can large groups book in Munich?
The inns are the easiest: the Hofbräuhaus takes reservations from four people, by email for large groups, the Augustiner Stammhaus has several halls, and the Wirtshaus am Bavariapark a function room for up to 300 guests. At the beer gardens of the Augustiner-Keller, Hirschgarten and Aumeister you reserve tables online. Neuraum has tables in three areas.
Do stag and hen groups get turned away in Munich?
There's no ban, but some landlords and bars in Bavaria don't take stag or hen groups. The safest bet is to reserve in advance and say that you're a stag or hen group. Drinking alcohol in the street around the main station is banned, and at the Wiesn bags over 3 litres and glass are not allowed.
Is a stag do or hen party in Munich worth it during the Wiesn?
For the experience yes, for the budget no. Rooms are at their most expensive then and go early. In every tent some of the seats are unreserved, but at weekends you'll need an early start. The Spring Festival in April or a Wiesn tour with a reservation is more relaxed.
What can you do in Munich when it rains?
Escape rooms in the Tal, on the Theresienhöhe or in Schwabing, the VR arena in the FORUM Schwanthalerhöhe, blacklight mini golf, skittles in the Westend, bowling in Schwabing or Unterföhring, the sauna at the Volksbad. And the beer halls of the Old Town work in any weather.
How early should you book?
For a stag do or bachelorette party in Munich during the Wiesn, the Spring Festival or big trade fairs, book your accommodation as early as possible. Whole rafts for the Isar raft trip go long in advance. Escape rooms, club tables and beer garden reservations at the weekend: one to two weeks ahead.
