During the week there's the NS night train, hourly from Rotterdam Centraal towards The Hague, Schiphol and Amsterdam. Taxis: RTC +31 10 462 60 60 or St-Job +31 10 425 70 00; only taxis with an RTX window card may pick up at the rank.
RET night bus ↗On Stadhuisplein the party cafés Après Ski Hut and Get Back are open until 05:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Nieuw Rotterdams Café on Witte de Withstraat turns into a club until 03:00 at weekends. Club nights at Annabel, Munch or Worm mostly run from 23:00 to 04:00; at Munch the door closes at 02:00.
Across the whole Centrum district, which covers all the nightlife areas, drinking alcohol on the street is banned, and an open bottle or can is enough. Anyone causing a drunken nuisance gets a fine anywhere in the city, and nuisance use of laughing gas costs €100. In the Netherlands you must carry ID, and alcohol is only sold to over-18s. On the Oude Haven there are green-roofed urinals to stop people peeing in the street.
Many clubs want a smart outfit: no caps, sportswear or shoulder bags for men, and always bring ID. At Munch men only get in from 20, and the door looks for mixed groups; at Beau the minimum age on club nights is 23. On Stadhuisplein large groups without a booking can be turned away, so book ahead.
By car, according to ADAC, it's 2 h 42 min from Düsseldorf, 2 h 50 min from Essen and 3 h 5 min from Cologne; a normal car doesn't need an environmental sticker, and many P+R car parks are free. By train you usually change at Utrecht Centraal, and from Schiphol the Intercity Direct takes 25 minutes. FlixBus comes from Berlin and Hamburg.
For a hotel for your stag or hen do in Rotterdam, Witte de Withstraat puts you in the middle of the action: there's King Kong Hostel with dorms, where groups of more than 12 book by email, and CityHub with sleeping pods. Sparks Hostel is near the central station, and Stayokay is even inside the cube houses on the Oude Haven.
Maritime climate, very changeable: the July average is 17.8 °C, January 3.6 °C. When it rains, stay dry in the covered Markthal, at karaoke at Seoul Sista or Dikke Mic, on the racing simulators at Racesquare or at Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, the world's first publicly accessible art depot.

Irish pub in the World Trade Center on Rodezand with live music 7 nights a week and live football on the screens. A big range of beers and whiskies, plus bar food; open Fridays from 14:00 and at weekends from 12:00. You pay when you order.
Lunch and borrel spot on the Meent for more than 25 years, with a terrace. The team organises borrels for 5 to 50 people with shared dining dishes, wine, cocktails, gin and tonics and beer; open until 01:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.
Student café on the Oude Haven with parties until 04:00 or 05:00, over-18s only at night. On Fridays and Saturdays there's the Vrienden Live Diner: 3 courses with live singalong music and entry to the afterparty for €42.50 per person. Around 6 minutes' walk from Blaak station.
British gastropub on a red lightship in the Wijnhaven, with its own floating brewery on board, making beers like a New England IPA and a red ale. According to the programme, live music, comedy and parties; Fridays and Saturdays until 02:00. The ship can also be hired for private parties.
According to the operator, Rotterdam's highest cocktail bar, at the top of the Zalmhaventoren near the Erasmusbrug; entry is free. Cocktails cost €17 according to the menu, with quiet background music rather than a club sound. Fridays and Saturdays until 01:00; larger groups enquire by email.

House and techno club in a former pedestrian tunnel under the Weena. A hydraulic system moves the DJ booth, lights and sound through the night and makes the space bigger. Open only on event nights with tickets, no regular bar.

Water taxis serve 50 stops in Rotterdam and Schiedam on demand, from €5.25 per person for a single trip in the Centrum zone. As a group, the private tour at a fixed price is worth it: 60 minutes for €160 for up to 12 people, with the route agreed with the skipper.
Electric sloeps for up to 12 people that you drive yourselves, from the jetty on Lombardkade on the Rotte. Hire costs €70 an hour plus a €250 deposit, and the crew explains the rules and the map first. For groups of more than 12 there are sloeps with a skipper for up to 30.

In late March more than 50 venues show art, plus the Art Rotterdam fair at Ahoy; Museumnacht010 is also in March.
On 27 April the whole country celebrates King's Day, a public holiday; cafés and restaurants are usually open.
In April there are three days of the Motel Mozaïque music festival in the middle of the month, plus the NN Marathon Rotterdam.
In late June the travelling theatre festival De Parade comes to the city for about ten days.
On a weekend in July, Friday to Sunday, the North Sea Jazz Festival plays at Rotterdam Ahoy.
In late July the Zomercarnaval summer carnival brings a big street parade through the city on a Friday and Saturday.
Three days in early September: shows, displays on the water and harbour tours during the World Port Days.
The port area is 42 km long. The Spido cruise from Willemsplein takes 75 minutes, and the water taxi serves around 50 landing stages.
