Amsterdam Stag Do & Bachelor Party: Canals, Genever and Clubs until Morning
Steering your own electric boat, genever at Wynand Fockink, techno on Rembrandtplein and the ferry to Noord: here's how to plan your stag do or hen party in Amsterdam, with the best things to do, prices and the city's rules.
Good to know
Stag & hen do planning tips
💶
What does a night out cost?
A beer (0.5 l) costs €6.80 on average in Amsterdam bars, an Amstel fluitje at Café Hoppe €3.50, cocktails at Dutch Courage €14.50 to €18.50. Club entry is mostly €10–25, and from Thursday to Sunday you'll hardly get in for free. Tipping isn't a must, 5 to 10% is usual; tap water is drinkable everywhere.
Buses and the metro run until 00:30, then night buses leave from Centraal Station, most of them via Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein. The night bus ticket costs €5.70 for 1.5 hours, and the day ticket for €10.00 is valid for 24 hours, nights included. The ferry to Noord is free, and the one to Buiksloterweg runs all night. Taxis with blue number plates wait at the Dam, Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein; the base fare is around €4.15.
In the De Wallen red-light district, bars close at 02:00 at weekends, and new guests only get in until 01:00. Elsewhere the night runs longer: Café Lux until 04:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, Shelter in Noord until at least 06:00, John Doe on Rembrandtplein until as late as 08:00. So start in the Old Town and move on to Leidseplein, Rembrandtplein or Noord.
⚠️
What's banned?
Amsterdam doesn't want party tourism: the city even runs a “Stay Away” campaign aimed at young men who come to party, drink and smoke weed. Smoking cannabis on the street is banned in the Old Town (up to €100), public urination and noise cost €150 each, and beer bikes are banned in the centre. Alcohol is off limits in most public places, and photos of the windows in the red-light district are not welcome.
🚤
Rules on the water
A leisure boat may carry no more than 12 people plus the skipper; larger groups need a licensed passenger vessel. Music from speakers is banned on open boats and costs €140; whoever steers may have no more than 0.5 per mille of alcohol in their blood. A rental boat from Mokumboot holds up to 8 people, one from Boaty up to 6, and you don't need a licence for either.
🚆
Getting there
The ICE runs direct to Amsterdam Centraal: from Düsseldorf in 2 h 14 min, from Cologne in 2 h 37 min, from Frankfurt in 3 h 53 min, from Berlin normally in 5 h 51 min. From Schiphol, 8 trains an hour take 15 to 17 minutes to the centre, around €5. Long-distance coaches stop at Sloterdijk and Bijlmer ArenA, both connected to trains, the metro and trams.
🛏️
Where to stay
For a hotel for your stag or hen do in Amsterdam, De Pijp, Oud-West, Oost and Noord are cheaper than the canal ring. A hostel bed costs €40–65, a budget hotel €100–180 a night, plus 12.5% tourist tax. Watch out: some places explicitly refuse stag and hen parties in their booking terms, so read them before you book.
☔
Weather and plan B
July brings around 22 °C, October is the wettest month with 90 mm, April the driest with 41 mm; around 133 rainy days a year. Best time to go: late April to early May for the tulips, and July/August. Plan B if it rains: escape rooms at Sherlocked, laser tag and bowling at Aloha, karaoke at Duke of Tokyo or the Heineken Experience.

Budget
How much does a stag or hen do in Amsterdam cost?
In Amsterdam half a litre of beer costs €6.80 on average, an Amstel fluitje at Café Hoppe €3.50, a cocktail at Dutch Courage €14.50 to €18.50, and a club mostly €10–25. Hotels, VIP tables and dinner shows push the budget up; rental boats split across the group and Foodhallen keep it down.

💡 How to save
Share a boat: a Mokumboot for up to 8 people costs €97.50 for 2 hours, around €12 a head, and you can bring your own drinks.
Fluitje instead of a pint: at Café Hoppe the small Amstel costs €3.50, half a litre €8.00.
Day ticket: for €10.00 you get 24 hours on trams, buses, the metro and ferries, nights included.
Foodhallen instead of a restaurant: 19 stalls under one roof, no booking, and everyone pays only for what they eat.
Group tasting: at Brouwerij 't IJ, €35 per person gets you 4 beers on tap with snacks, for 1.5 hours.
Guide prices per person, based on the prices of the venues and tours on this page. The bride or groom usually doesn't pay; their share is split across the group. The planner above adds up what your programme costs.
Travel isn't included, as that depends on where you're coming from. Accommodation is based on the country's price level. Work out your own budget with the cost calculator.

Questions
Amsterdam stag do and hen party FAQ
Where can large groups party in Amsterdam?
De Twee Zwaantjes explicitly helps with stag and hen parties and large groups, Brouwerij 't IJ runs tastings for 10 to 40 people, and Aloha has a VIP room for up to 18 people. At Club NYX you can hire individual floors, and Chin Chin Club has VIP tables for 4 to 16 people. Some clubs on Rembrandtplein turn away groups of more than 4 at the door, so book a table there.
What's banned on a stag do in Amsterdam?
Beer bikes are banned in the centre, and so is alcohol in most public places. Smoking cannabis on the street costs up to €100 in the Old Town, public urination, noise and littering €150 each, public drunkenness €100. Music from speakers is banned on open boats, with a €140 fine. With its “Stay Away” campaign, the city explicitly campaigns against party tourism.
What are good things to do for a hen party in Amsterdam?
For a bachelorette party in Amsterdam: a cocktail workshop at the Bols Cocktail Experience on Museumplein, cocktails on the 11th floor at LuminAir or at Bar Oldenhof, a canal cruise in German with drinks, Dutch singalong songs at De Twee Zwaantjes and the dinner show at Chin Chin Club. At night: Supperclub on the Singel or Madam by Night in A'DAM Toren.
What about coffeeshops and the red-light district?
Coffeeshops are tolerated, with entry from 18 with ID, and possession of up to 5 grams isn't prosecuted. Smoking weed isn't allowed in most bars and clubs, and it's banned on the street in the Old Town. In the De Wallen red-light district, bars close at 02:00 at weekends, and photos of the windows are not welcome.
What can you do in Amsterdam when it rains?
Escape rooms at Sherlocked in the Beurs van Berlage, laser tag, bowling and glow mini golf at Aloha near Centraal, karaoke at Duke of Tokyo, the Heineken Experience, the Amsterdam Dungeon on Rokin or Foodhallen with 19 stalls under one roof. And, of course, any bruin café.
